As part of our commitment to the community, MATTER Residences donate a percentage of our net commission to local and global initiatives. Whether you are buying or selling your smart home, we are here to help.
Matter is a protocol built on top of existing tech standards like Wi-Fi and Thread. Its design aims to simplify the smart home and reduce reliance on cloud services that could go down or be hacked. It’s designed to work locally so that your smart plug and lock can talk directly with each other, without needing a cloud service back-end between them, explains Mindala-Freeman.
There’s no single app you’ll use to control your Matter-compatible devices, but the four big platforms — Apple Home, Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings — all have promised to support it. Smart voice assistants from those four platforms will also be able to control Matter devices through a feature called Multi-Admin, so you can pick your favorite and still get everything working. Matter-compatible bridges and hubs from the likes of TP-Link, Philips Hue and Aqara are expected to be available, too.
It will take some time for most existing products to get upgradable to Matter, but the big companies are already starting to roll out their plans. For example, the latest Nanoleaf Shapes and Elements bulbs will be upgradable to Matter with a firmware update. Likewise, Nordic will demonstrate the use of Matter with its nRF52 and nRF53 SoCs at CES 2024, which can be integrated into smart speaker speakers, routers and digital displays. matter residences
